Previous Quotes

Okay, by popular demand (well, maybe not popular….maybe just one person *bg*), I am creating a page for previous quotes. But it will get reeeeally long over time, I warn you! 🙂

All the beautiful sentiments in the world weigh less than a single lovely action.

— James Russell Lowell

For the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house. They may allow us temporarily to beat him at this own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change. And this fact is only threatening to those women who still define the master’s house as their only source of support.

I have learned that people will forget what you said, forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.

People are like stained glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within.

Money makes people rich; it is a fallacy to think it makes them better, or even that it makes them worse. People are what they do, and what they leave behind.

Fairy tales are more than true; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.

My concern is not that the world is full of bad art…which I’m not even sure it is…my concern is that there are all kinds of people in the world who believe somehow that this — our greatest shared human inheritance — the right to participate in creation, the right to become a person who is unfolding, the right to look for the jewels that are hidden within you, the right to leave a footprint on the world — that that only belongs to the elite, the trained, the professional and the tormented.

A creative life is any life that is guided more by curiosity than by fear. Period. Because that will give you a creative life: if you routinely, habitually — not just once, twice, three times, but routinely and habitually make a practice out of it, make a RELIGION out of it. Making sure you’re always following your curiosity above your fear.

— Elizabeth Gilbert

The early bird gets the worm – which is what he deserves.

You have to be going to a pretty awful place if getting there is half the fun.

On June 23, 1942, there was a group of French Jews in a German prison, on Polish soil. The first person I took was close to the door, his mind racing, then reduced to pacing, then slowing down, slowing down…

Please believe me when I tell you that I picked up each soul that day as if it were newly born. I even kissed a few weary, poisoned cheeks. I listened to their last, gasping cries. Their vanishing words. I watched their love visions and freed them from their fear.

I took them all away, and if ever there was a time I needed distraction, this was it. In complete desolation, I looked at the world above. I watched the sky as it turned from silver to gray to the color of rain. Even the clouds were trying to get away.

Sometimes I imagined how everything looked above those clouds, knowing without question that the sun was blond, and the endless atmosphere was a giant blue eye.

They were French, they were Jews, and they were you.

His soul sat up. It met me. Those kinds of souls always do — the best ones. The ones who rise up and say, “I know who you are and I am ready. Not that I want to go, of course, but I will come.” Those souls are always light because more of them have been put out. More of them have already found their way to other places.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

I fell in love — that is the only expression I can think of — at once, and am still at the mercy of words, though sometimes now, knowing a little of their behavior very well, I think I can influence them slightly and have learned to beat them now and then, which they appear to enjoy.

“Nolite te bastardes carborundorum.”
(Latin: Don’t let the bastards grind you down.)
I pray….My God. Who Art in the Kingdom of Heaven, which is within…..I wish I knew what You were up to. But whatever it is, help me to get through it, please. Though maybe it’s not Your doing; I don’t believe for an instant that what’s going on out there is what You meant.I have enough daily bread, so I won’t waste time on that. It isn’t the main problem. The problem is getting it down without choking on it. Now we come to forgiveness. Don’t worry about forgiving me right now. There are more important things. For instance: keep the others safe, if they are safe. Don’t let them suffer too much. If they have to die, let it be fast. You might even provide a Heaven for them. We need You for that. Hell we can make for ourselves.
Better? I say, in a small voice. How can he think this is better? Better never means better for everyone, he says. It always means worse, for some.

“…D’you know its a great thing being a eunuch as I am: that is not knowing what’s the right side of a skirt: women confide in one. One pulls a shade over the fury of sex; and then all the veins and marbling, which, between women, are so fascinating, show out. Here in my cave I see lots of things you blazing beauties make invisible by the light of your own glory.”

–Virginia Woolf to Vita Sackville-West, 1/3/27

“The book that one is writing at the moment is really the most intimate part of one, and the part about which one preserves the strictest secrecy. What is love or sex, compared with the intensity of the life one leads in one’s book? A trifle; a thing to be shouted from the hill-tops.”

Civilization is a stream with banks. The stream is sometimes filled with blood from people killing, stealing, shouting and doing things historians usually record, while on the banks, unnoticed, people build homes, make love, raise children, sing songs, write poetry.

The story of civilization is the story of what happened on the banks. Historians are pessimists because they ignore the banks for the river.

I realized what a terrorist is. A terrorist, I think, is simply another kind of pornographer. The pornographer pretends he is disgusted by his work; the terrorist pretends he is uninterested in the means. The ends, they say, are what they care about. But they are both lying….It is never the ends that matter — it is only the means that matter. The terrorist and the pornographer are in it for the means. The means is everything to them. The blast of the bomb, the elephant position, the Schlagobers and blood — they love it all. Their intellectual detachment is a fraud; their indifference is feigned. They both tell lies about having “higher purposes.” A terrorist is a pornographer.

I liked the way you needed me every time when things got rocky

I was believing in you
Was I mistaken?
Do you say… do you say what you mean?
I want our love to last forever

But I’d rather you be mean than love and lie
I’d rather hear the truth and have to say goodbye

So was I once myself a swinger of birches.
And so I dream of going back to be.
It’s when I’m weary of considerations,
And life is too much like a pathless wood
Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs
Broken across it, and one eye is weeping
From a twig’s having lashed across it open.
I’d like to get away from earth awhile
And then come back to it and begin over.
May no fate willfully misunderstand me
And half grant what I wish and snatch me away
Not to return. Earth’s the right place for love:
I don’t know where it’s likely to go better.
I’d like to go by climbing a birch tree,
And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk
Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more,
But dipped its top and set me down again.
That would be good both going and coming back.
One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.

“Do you believe in love?” he said.

Sometimes I believe that love dies but hope springs eternal. Sometimes I believe that hope dies but love springs eternal. Sometimes I believe that sex plus guilt equals love, and sometimes I believe that sex plus guilt equals good sex. Sometimes I believe that love is as natural as the tides, and sometimes I believe love is an act of will. Sometimes I believe that some people are better at love than others, and sometimes I believe that everyone is faking it.

Thank you Alyx for listening to your (one) reader. Y’know all it takes is for one person to raise the most brilliant idea on earth! *wink*

BTW, I like this quote a lot. Ephron is so funny.

    • Alyx says:

Every reader is important to me, SP. And yes, all it takes is one brilliant idea. 🙂

I remember you saying you liked Ephron. And I do have more quotes of hers, so you will probably see them in the future too. Thanks for your feedback….and your brilliant idea. *vbg*

  2. SP says:

    now I’m blushing *g*

  3. Luke says:

Haha i lik the quote from Miss Piggy she’s so funny!! LOL! 🙂

  4. Basketball Girl says:

Could we maybe have a new quote, please? 🙂

    • Alyx says:

Rather demanding, aren’t you? 😀 Just kidding. Thank you for reminding me that it has been AGES since I updated this page as well! So there are 3 new quotes, just to make up for the wait. Thanks, BG.

      • Basketball Girl says:

Thank you kindly for the new quotes. I find the quotes individuals know and/or like to be intriguing. Also simply I enjoy learning new things. I think the Margaret Bonnano quote is wonderful and insightful! And ma’am I have NO desire to be demanding towards a top like you, especially with all the wood you seem to have hanging around over there 🙂

        • Alyx says:

What Ms. Bonnano said is very true, and something most people don’t learn till later in life. And avoiding wood by being well-behaved is a good practice as well. You do have your wise moments, BG. 😉

  5. pippin says:

Why have I not seen this page before?!

These quotes are great! My favourite is from the wise Miss Piggy. *g*

    • Alyx says:

Why have you not seen this page before? Perhaps you were too busy looking at kink! 😀 And yes, I love that Miss Piggy quote. A true porcine diva…and quite toppy too. *g*

  6. Basketball Girl says:

“Being a writer is like having homework every night for the rest of your life”
I knew there was a good reason why I didn’t like to write…homework forever with words and not numbers! But I could sure keep a top in business with the amount of time I would spend procrastinating if I had to write every night.
    BG

    • Alyx says:

Yeah, it does feel like homework sometimes, and I’m sure if I wrote for a living it would be even more of a burden. (Not saying it’s like that for people who are disciplined enough to write for a living, just that it would be that way for me.) But other times, when it flows and you get it just right, it’s heaven. 🙂

  7. Basketball Girl says:

Entering at my own risk since I somehow keep ending up, end up when you are around. Would you share some new quotes with us, please O Kind and Gentle One?
    *Quickly leaving :)*

    • Alyx says:

*LOL* Discretion the better part of valor, eh? 😉 Yes, thank you for reminding me about that! I have been going crazy trying to book a flight, but will be updating the quote this evening after work, okay?

  8. Basketball Girl says:

I doubt the discretion will last very long, but I’ll enjoy it while it does…
Seems you are doing plenty of ‘top baiting’ for the both of us 🙂

    • Alyx says:

I doubt the discretion will last very long either, but I’LL enjoy it while it does. 😀

(And it’s not called top-baiting when a top does it. *vbg*)

  9. Basketball Girl says:

Interesting new quotes. Now I feel compelled to go read So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish. Though it looks like Wikipedia has a pretty good summary of the book. Is it worth the read?

    • Alyx says:

Good grief, why would you want to read it now after reading that summary! It told you the ending and everything! *frown* (On the other hand, it was useful to me, having read it, to see that. I was like, “Oh, so THAT’S what it’s about!” *LOL*)

I did enjoy the book….it appealed to my love of fantasy/sci-fi and my sense of the ridiculous.

      • Basketball Girl says:

Perhaps if you read Wikipedia when trying to do your homework instead of some assigned reading, it wouldn’t take as long and you could write more stories 🙂

        • Alyx says:

Perhaps if I listened to advice from an unrepentant brat, that would lead me down the dangerous road of becoming a brat myself? 😉

I have 3 more lessons and a final exam to conquer before I’m done, Basketball Girl. The end is in sight!

          • SP says:

Alyx, being the conscientious student that you are, I’m sure you’ll pass the final with flying colors. Good luck!

umm ….. story time after that? More quotes? Blog post? Just tryin’ to think of leisure activities to keep you occupied. 😉

          • Basketball Girl says:

I’m sure you’ll blow the curve for everyone else, seems that studying and doing assignments are effective in doing well on exams. Having the end in sight is exciting, I’m guessing you could use a bit of a break.
Becoming a brat (hm…I do believe at some point you perfected that art).
            🙂

            • disneydyke says:

Did you just call Alyx a brat? This is going to be priceless! Someone uy me some popcorn!
Alyx, congrats on almost finishing that course. Brat-attitude to that: heck, I’m almost finished, I will just read a couple of kinky stories and finish tomorrow.
Not that I would know anything about it.

              • SP says:

*bringing popcorn and joining DD in the soft couch*
Ah, let’s sit back and relax. Music anyone? *vbg*

              • Basketball Girl says:

No where in the statement did it say “Alyx is a brat” that would be implying something I did not mean. However, I think to be a ‘switch’ at some point the person probably had some brat tendencies. I do not think Alyx is a brat in her current state. I have not seen any brattiness displayed in her communication or actions since I have ‘known’ her.
I can get in enough trouble of my own DD and Peach, I don’t need any help 🙂

                • disneydyke says:

But I love to help! 😉
Interesting what you say. But being a switch means being into giving and receiving, not necesarily into brattily receiving it. One can end up end up without being a brat. Tops are very “unfair” that way I hear.

              • Mil says:

Oh no! Is the show cancelled now? *Still hopeful, pulls up a seat next to Peach*

              • Alyx says:

Well now! *narrowing eyes as I take in the audience gathering around* It’s a good thing you issued that disclaimer, Basketball Girl. Because your original answer that I “at some point perfected the art of becoming brat” definitely had my palm itching, young lady!

And not to put too fine a point on it, but I do believe being a switch implies more that some part of you enjoys receiving…..ah, just as I was typing this DD posted the same thought! *g* I will have to admit to moments of less than stellar behavior, but having met and getting to know Fizzy, I have to say I am nowhere in brat league! 😀

                • disneydyke says:

Lapsus, Alyx? You do believe it implies more? 😉

Maybe there’s a brat-scale, y’know? Seriously though, we all have moments of less than stellar behavior, that doesn’t mean we are brats.

That doesn’t mean it’s not awful fun to go around calling switchy tops brats, but clearly BG is not as brave as I thought. 😉

Nah, BG is just actually that respectful. I’ve never seen any bad net behavior from her since I’ve ‘known’ her actually, quite the contrary. She is just playful and I thought I would be playful myself. I don’t mean to get anyone in serious trouble. (This is my own disclaimer).

                • Basketball Girl says:

The itching palm was probably more related to my general approach since the probability of me doing something a bit less angelic is usually high. I somehow think you may have that feeling when I post (not that you have been incorrect in your assessments).
Have you ever written about the development of a switch or top? I have no problem understanding brats 😉

                • Fizzy says:

But you’re learning very quickly, Alyx. *proud*

                • Alyx says:

What I’m learning is that I need to keep a close eye on you, young lady! The brat mind is even more devious than I imagined! *swat! swat! swat!*

  10. sparrow says:

I am puzzled Alyx. Since Wikipedia is sort of today’s Cliff Notes, and BG was suggesting that you resort to Wiki instead of doing the assigned reading, was she not suggestinig… dare I speak the word … cheating? What would you have done if Fizzy had employed such a ‘short cut’?

Not that I want to get BG in trouble, mind you. She really does manage that quite nicely on her own.

Just let me pull up a chair next to Peach and DD and Mil, in case there is more to be anticipated here than a bowl of popcorn and a dissertation on the development of a switch or top. (I think you have just been BG’d!)

    • Basketball Girl says:

I always knew little birdies were a force to be reckoned with, but my dear sparrow I made you beignets that should count for something.

      • disneydyke says:

Maybe she prefers caviar, she might be too refined. But I thought brat camarederie counted for something. You can’t trust birdies though.

        • Basketball Girl says:

No, brat trust and camaraderie are here and never left. sparrow only speaks the truth and that is honorable.

          • disneydyke says:

No one handed me the Brat Code of Honour, I feel I’m missing on something here. Then again, I insist I’m not a brat myself. 😉

            • Fizzy says:

I think the Brat Code only demands that if there is an opportunity to brat, a brat takes it.
Defending another brat (or not-a-brat, if you prefer) is of course commendable…but better if done from a safe distance from the nearest top. Like the old joke says, “I don’t have to run faster than the bear – I just have to run faster than you.” 😆

  11. Alyx says:

Hmm….the general consensus (even by you, Basketball Girl, who admitted my itching palm is justified) seems to be that BG is asking for a trip to Lapland! I tend to agree with this assessment. *picking up my newest implement* Okay, front and center, missy! *pointing* I think it’s time we had a little talk.

    • Basketball Girl says:

Um…so did you want to talk about the book? I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. I doubt I can have an intelligent conversation about it, but if you really want to talk about the book I can probably get through it in the next couple days. Just give me a couple days and I’ll get back to you.

      • Alyx says:

No, we’re not going to talk about the book, young lady. *pulling up a chair and seating myself* We’re going to discuss your penchant for provoking banter. *pulling you over my knee* Any last remarks before we begin?

        • Basketball Girl says:

          No ma’am

          • Basketball Girl says:

Thanks Sandy for providing more options for Alyx, who seems to have a large supply to chose from, but not really a cane person.

          • Alyx says:

“No ma’am”?? *raised brow* Well, it seems you DO have a modicum of common sense and self-preservation, Basketball Girl! *bg*

As it happens, Sandy, the cane is not my latest implement. I recently purchased this little gem, and let me tell you, it packs quite a wallop! Fizzy says it’s the closest implement she’s felt to my hand, but the leather can deliver a rump-roasting long after my palm would normally give out! 😀

            • Basketball Girl says:

I admit that common sense and self-preservation escape my mind often. I do believe I have retrieved it after some looking. Don’t worry it is all back in place and all is well 🙂
I shall return to my angelic state, no need to continue to dwell on the matter.

            • disneydyke says:

Well, that paddle actually seems like fun.
              I’m that kink-deprived. And depraved. 🙂
Or maybe it’s all a plot to make sure I never get spanked.

            • Ash says:

OMG, Alyx! That paddle looked sooo pretty! I want one. 😀 The pattern was sooo shiny. O_o Doesn’t look stingy at all.

            • sandy1984 says:

Aww Alyx… I was so looking forward to seeing you wield that cane!!
I hope you know you’ve completely burst my bubble now.

Are you sure Fizzy isn’t having you on, that paddle looks a bit on the light side to me.

            • Alyx says:

That paddle is pretty, isn’t it? They have another, even prettier one (all red and gold), which smacks just as effectively. Don’t let the attractive decoration fool you — it has a reinforced core which means it can deliver a mean *THUD* or a burning sting, depending on how you use it. I would really recommend it, actually. 🙂

        • Ash says:

Awesome! This is getting good. I’m gonna pull up a chair too. To… emhh… give you moral support, Alyx. 😀

Alyx, the cane isn’t very effective in an otk position… I thought you knew that! Best get her to bend over the back of the chair instead.
    I hope you’ve been practising!!

  13. Alyx says:

All right then, let’s get started. It’s a good thing these silky basketball shorts are so thin….I don’t think I have to take them down. However we’ll see how well you take your spanking, young lady. *wrapping my arm around your waist and holding you firmly* *tapping your bottom with the heavy leather paddle* Let’s start with with wise-arse remarks about me taking a long time to write!

*raising the paddle and bringing it down solidly against your bottom, first right cheek, then left, alternating in rhythm with my words* I am very aware of how long it takes me to post, young lady! I don’t need your comments about writing faster!

*hiking up my knee to raise your bottom* Not let’s address the suggestion I cheat on my lessons! *short sharp whacks alternating on your upper thighs* I do hope you realize how that would be cheat-ing one-self!

And the comment implying I am a brat?! *big sweeping arcs of the paddle from below, making your cheeks bounce with each swat* You should definitely know better than to provoke a top like that, BG! Even a switch is not going to take kindly to such an implication from a brat like yourself!

*pausing now, resting the paddle against your burning bottom* I feel this has been a productive discussion, my dear. Would you like to contribute anything at this point?

    • Basketball Girl says:

      No ma’am. I’m sorry Alyx.

      • Alyx says:

Then, in that case, I think we’re done here. *patting your bottom approvingly and putting down the paddle* A long overdue spanking, but the slate is clean now! *pulling you upright and giving you a cuddle* So you can start again accumulating provoking remarks as usual, BG. *chuckle* But hopefully the good behavior will last for a little while longer. 😉

  14. Amy says:

I think this is the first spanking you’ve given on your blog

  15. sparrow says:

Ummm, BG? I think you have just been … Alyxed.
    Pass the popcorn, Mil.

  16. Amy says:

Hi Ash. I moved to a different state recently, so I have been busy situating my life.

  17. sparrow says:

Quiet down front you guys. It says she ‘paused’ and asked if BG had anything to ‘contribute’… You are watching a master at work here! Hush, before she sends an usher after you and makes you the star of Act II. (Turning to Mil: “Honestly! These matinees are always so filled with rambunctious brats!”)

    • Basketball Girl says:

sparrow come now, there is no reason for her to continue. I’ve learned my lesson, thank you. But I’ll be happy to let you take my place 🙂

    • Mil says:

*Passes the popcorn to sparrow* “Rambunctious brats, indeed sparrow!” *watches sparrow polish off the popcorn like a pelican, realizing (hoping) we’re only halfway, decides to make use of the interval to fetch another batch for the growing brat pack*

  18. lola says:

well, alrighty then. I see I’ve missed much…..*smile*

  19. sparrow says:

    I’m out of here… ! 😉

  20. Alyx says:

*watches the wiser brats leaving with a smile* Okay, I guess that leaves you two, Disneydyke and Ash. *retrieves cane from closet* *taps my palm consideringly* I will have to see the effect I’m leaving behind, for safety’s sake. So that means the trousers will have to come down. You can leave your knickers on….for now.

*pointing at the chair* Move that to the center of the room, lower your trousers, and bend over it, please. I want your toes touching the floor on this side *pointing to the right* and your hands touching the floor on this side. *pointing to the opposite side*

*swishing the cane through the air* I hope you know what you are asking for, young lady!

    • Ash says:

Ash winces at the sound of the cane swishing throught the air. “Umh… Alyx… I was just kidding. Hehe. Surely a little cheek is not a caneable offence?” she says hiding behind DD who is far braver that herself. She whispers into her ear. “DD, you are about three months older… why don’t you go first.”

      • disneydyke says:

DD is not feeling so brave but she has always wanted to protect someone three months older than her so she just walks towards that chair, she does as instructed and when she is bending over she thinks: well, this is not very comfortable. However, she knew people are expecting the best brattery she can give, so she just says: I’m ready, ma’am. And then sings: hit me baby one more time!

        • disneydyke says:

          * younger.

        • Basketball Girl says:

Ash and Disneydyke, you two have lost your minds. Are you really going to volunteer for the cane when you haven’t actually gotten to do anything less angelic? If you need suggestions on how to brat effectively to earn a punishment I’m sure there are plenty of individuals who could give you some ideas (not me of course because I’m a perfect angel). You two should have scattered when you were given the option. Good luck with cane…

        • Fizzy says:

*watching with interest* I am 100% with BG on this one. Alyx is a novice at this caning stuff – and you’re VOLUNTEERING to be her test-brats? Without even getting some entertaining brattery and misbehavior out of it? I realize you’re a little limited by the blog format, you can’t exactly put Hello Kitty decals on Alyx’s car or steal her pot stash or anything like that, but for heaven’s sake, create a meme from Amy’s comment on Bug Alyx Here “I have never seen a story added” (which I’m still laughing about) (laughing with you, Amy, that was awesome) or something. Earn your caning! *muttering to myself – volunteering?!* 😉

          • disneydyke says:

So I’m actually a guinea pig, am I not? We should become test-brats, Ash. Don’t worry, Alyx, I’ll take dollars. Also, cookies.

          • Tenth Muse Top says:

Is it too late to mention that Alyx’s skills with the cane, while newly acquired, are simply legendary? I speak from personal experience – Alyx took to wielding a cane rather like the young Mozart took to the clavier – quickly, intuitively, sensuously – intensely. Some people were born to compose the Concerto for Flute and Harp in C major, Alyx was born to wield a cane.

Just in case any brat out there thought the Mistress of this blog didn’t know how to deliver a proper set of stripes. *smile*

  21. Mil says:

*watches through the window, hidden from Alyx’s view, happy to still have the popcorn*

    • kiaigrrl says:

Pssst! Mil! Pass some over will ya? *After throwing some M&Ms into the popcorn, she finds a box to stand on and peers through the window with Mil.*

  22. Alyx says:

Alyx hears the sound of brattery encouragement behind her and turns around slowly, cane still in hand. Her eyes narrow. “BG, Fizzy,” she says ominously. “How nice of you to join us. I am not surprised that my brat is interested in stirring rebellion, though I would’ve thought her bottom might still be feeling the effects of the last spanking I administered! I can see another is due. But you, BG….after such recent disciplining I would’ve hoped you might’ve made it a point to stay out of trouble longer!” She shook her head. “Very well, you two — pull up a chair, bare your bottom and bend over it. I might as well take care of all of you at the same time!”

She turned back to where Disneydyke was singing and calling out to Ash to keep her courage up. “You, bend your knees more, and raise that bottom higher! That’s right. And you, Ash, pull up a chair as well.” She whipped the cane back and forth till it whistled. “There are going to be 24 sets of stripes laid on today…..I reckon that’s good enough ‘practice’ for anyone!”

    • disneydyke says:

How nice! A group caning, that will strengten our brat-bond!

*whispering to my fellow brats* My strategy is to convince her she will be doing us a favour by caning us. I think we can get out of this if we play our cards well.

    • Ash says:

Ash pulls up a chair and places it next to, DD. Terrified she looks back at Alyx and gives her a pleading look. “Alyx ma’am… do we really have to pull our pants down? I’m sure it will sting either way.”

    • Fizzy says:

I think I’ll generously give my stripes to one of the other brats, as they want it and I was just tryig to help. I know, I’m nice that way.

    • Basketball Girl says:

I agree with Fizzy. Ash and DD want to be caned. It is better to give my stripes to the others (perhaps sparrow would like some too) than to receive. sparrow was the one who stirred the pot and you haven’t ever spanked her. I don’t want her to feel left out. I think I should just run along and go play basketball.

  23. sparrow says:

“Hi guys! What are you looking through the window at? I thought he show was over. What in the world has BG done now? I thought she lit out when she had the chance!”

    • Mil says:

“Hi sparrow, where have you been?! Boy, has the sh*t hit the fan here! And Alyx is being kept very busy.. did you see her and Fizzy on the ‘Bug Alyx’ page? It was gold!” (It really was very funny, Alyx and Fizzy :D)

*settles down with Kiai, sparrow, mm’s and popcorn, thinking life is sweet*

    • Basketball Girl says:

Seeing sparrow in the window waving her car keys, I will take this opportunity to tuck and roll, spring to my feet and haul my uncaned butt out the door to the waiting get-away car. Over my shoulder I yell, “Good luck Y’all.” I must go attend a family reunion. Plus I don’t do canes ma’am. I’m Southern and canes aren’t something I’m accustomed to.

  24. sparrow says:

Uh, gotta run Mil! I left my engine running.

    • Alyx says:

Alyx watches as BG and Sparrow decide they don’t have the heart (or bottom) to test her caning skills. Fizzy will receive the cane regardless, she decides. But with a personalized attention all to herself. She turns back to the two brats who remain.

“Yes, Ash, you do have to pull your pants down. You are quite right that it will burn either way, but I need to see where the rattan is landing, and the stripes will guide me.” She watches as Ash pales even further, but takes down her pants as ordered. While she lowers herself over her own chair, Alyx walks over to where Disneydyke has been patiently waiting.

“You are either very brave, eager, or foolish, young lady!” Alyx lines up the cane carefully against DD’s bottom. “Or perhaps all three. In any case, you are about to reap the rewards of your wise-arse remark!”

Alyx pulls the cane back slowly, then lets fly with a stroke. It lands solidly against DD’s upper buttock, leaving a tramline of red behind. Alyx waits for the impact to register, which, judging by Disneydyke’s gasp, isn’t long.

      • disneydyke says:

I am not foolish! But I will admit it hurts more than I expected. I was eager to test how much it would hurt, now I know and as they say: ignorance is bl…

Breaking out character: Wait, that’s not realistic enough. Even I wouldn’t say all of that after that stroke.

Final response: I squeal in my high pitched voice and I jump too. However, I remember tops are very peculiar about not letting brats rubbing our bottoms, so I don’t rub… for now.

I will not ask for mercy however and taking to my three months older friend role, I manage to say: Ash, don’t worry, it isn’t so bad.

        • disneydyke says:

May I make another out of character appreciation? I really like how wise-arse remark sounds. I’m imagining it in a british accent, of course.

    • Alyx says:

Alyx is amused by Disneydyke’s bravery. She knows the stroke she left will continue to throb, and it’s still early…five more strokes to go. For now, she leaves one brat and approaches the other.

“All right, young lady. You were also quite ready to say ‘the word,’ so let’s hope you are equally ready to take the consequences!” Alyx lines up the cane against the shivering cheek in front of her, and watches Ash close her eyes in preparation. The stroke, when it lands, makes a thwacking sound and leaves a similar red weal behind. Ignoring Ash’s cry of pain, Alyx makes her way back to Disneydyke.

  25. sandy1984 says:

Pot stash eh Alyx!! Naughty, naughty.. hope you’re watching out for Dog the Bounty Hunter!

P.S. They’re all gagging for a set of stripes with that cane, make sure you lay them on good and hard…I’m sure they would be disappointed if you went easy!!

    • Alyx says:

I have no pot stash, Sandy! Ignore the mischief of my brat Fizzy — I would never dare jeopardize my job that way. (When I retire, however, I may just decide to indulge on the rare occasion. *LOL*)

You want to hear something funny? When TMT and I first hooked up, she used to watch “Dog the Bounty Hunter” just to see the island where I live, and would gaze at the screen hoping to catch a glimpse of me in the background. As if I would be frequenting the crack dens in Chinatown! *snort*

(No worries, I intend to give those naughty brats exactly what they deserve. *g*)

      • Ash says:

Awww…. I was gonna ask Fizzy if we could nick your pot stash together as she seems to know where it was. 😦 Should be a kinklet…. SK brats stealing toppy pot stash. 😀 *LOL*

      • sandy1984 says:

Alyx, that really is funny and I have a confession…the couple of times I saw that show, I would wonder if you were one of the people in the background! I must be mad, at least TMT knew what you looked like!

As for the pot, don’t worry, you’re not missing anything…much better off with a nice bottle of vino!
You really should do something about Fizzy’s fibbing though…

      • Alyx says:

I would advise against joining Fizzy in any capers, Ash. She invariably gets caught and punished. *raised brow*

*LOL* Sandy, let me assure you I am NEVER in the background of anywhere Dog is busting people! (Although I did once meet him at the airport. He politely allowed me to precede him through the security line, as he said they always take a long time over him! 😀 )

  26. disneydyke says:

For a moment DD thought about running for the door. She then realized she was not a very fast runner and she was also a bit clumsy. Then she had this mental image of someone running with her trousers in the ankles and falling. She supressed a giggle: how to explain to a solemn top she was just trying to look at the bright side of life? She was lost in all these thoughts when she felt the next stroke landing.
    . Fuck!! I mean… Frac!! I want a frac!!!

    • pippin says:

*LOL* You crack me up, DisneyDyke! Thanks for that. 😀

    • Alyx says:

Alyx gazed in satisfaction at the second tramline, laid on just below the first. Disneydyke was struggling to restrain her swearing, and she couldn’t keep her bottom from wriggling in pain. A short walk over to Ash, and a similar stroke was laid on. Now both brats were starting to realize that “six of the very best” were nothing to laugh at!

(Though I can well appreciate the bystanders’ amusement. *bg*)

      • disneydyke says:

(Well, I’m very serious about wanting a frac. Bystanders should chime in with pennies until I can buy a custom-made frac.)
Six of the best? Not even Eton was so etonian!
Oh well, only four to go.

      • Alyx says:

Alyx took her time over strokes three and four, resting her hand on the back of each brat and tapping the cane against their white bottoms, before drawing back and letting fly. The scarlet lines which built had a beauty about them, and would give Disneydyke and Ash something to think about whenever they sat down.

“DD, I will chime in with pennies myself if you still want a frac when this is over,” Alyx murmured. “But perhaps you’ll want a pillow instead?”

        • disneydyke says:

          First of all…

Frac! Frac! Yes, still wanting it.

I have my own pillow, I’ll just be sure to carry it to all places, I might even attach it to my bike, no biggie. It’s really generous of you to chime in with pennies for the frac, ma’am. It feels as special as the first time I received pocket money, then give it back to ma so she would safely keep it in the bank (y’know, cuz I thought keeping money in a bank is always safe). But I digress and I will not risk being caned by a banker. This caning business surely is serious.

          • disneydyke says:

*gave. Grammar is leaving me today.

          • Mil says:

DD, what the heck do you mean by a “frac”?? Is it a cigarette? I have heard “Let me smack your frac”, which means “Give me a smoke”.

            • disneydyke says:

I thought it was a word in English as well. It’s a kind of suit. A tail-coat.

            • Ash says:

I was thinking Frakk in my mind, which to me means a coat in Norwegian. Also… frock means dress right? lol

            • Mil says:

Silly me. Yes it is an English word.. I just hadn’t come across it before. For a minute there I thought you were asking us to throw pennies in for a custom made f**k. I was going to suggest we pitch in for a decent vibrator instead. I’m glad I asked first 🙂

(Sorry Alyx, for making more of a mess of your blog)

            • Alyx says:

Don’t apologize, Mil. I had no idea what Disneydyke was talking about either! *LOL* And it’s called a “frock coat” in English….”frac” is Spanish, Italian, or French, according to Wikipedia. Interesting it’s the same in Norwegian too!

              • disneydyke says:

You had no idea about what I was talking about and you offered to chime in? That’s so generous of you, Alyx! Also, so trusting! I could have been asking for naughty stuff, y’know? In fact, I would take Mil on her office, but I won’t settle for a vibrator when Loki is giving away enchanted dildos. LOL.

                • disneydyke says:

                  * offer.

Seriously, is my English leaving me so I can fit another language in my brain or am I having a series of freudian slips? Being taken to someone’s office might be an interesting experience, not that I’m craving experiences so soon. I’m not that greedy.

                • Mil says:

*Lol* Offer, Office, Orifice.. any of those would work. Your English is just fine, DD 😉

        • Ash says:

Even though Ash was a little curious about the cane, she has to admit to herself that giving Alyx cheek was not a good idea. The cane HURTS! But she sucks it up and comforts herself that she and DD has got European bravery… unlike some other brats that scarpered. If she can ice bathe, she can take six of the best too.

  27. sparrow says:

Scarpered infers one is running away from a felony or misdeed, Ash. BG had already paid dearly for her misbehavior and had said more than once that she had no desire to experience the cane. Since she had no curiosity and had not earned any further punishment, I would not say she scarpered. She simply made a polite exit. I, on the other hand, having been somewhat responsible for her getting caught and dealt with for what she did do wrong, (with my totally innocent question to Alyx,) felt an obligation to offer her … transportation. (angelic smile)

I, too, am curious about the sensation of a cane, but I think not enough to endure the experience first hand. Especially not when Alyx and DD have given such intensely realistic descriptions that will suffice very nicely. The cane is one of those experiences I deem best to remain vicarious. ( I wonder what hemlock tastes like, too… but not enough to drink the tea.) 😉

    • Ash says:

🙂 Well to be honest when I wrote it I wasn’t sure if scarpered was even a word lol. I forgot to check. I just thought I remembered it from a Harry Potter book… hehe. My English and needs new clever words to its vocabulary. I thought it just meant to run a way… I did not refer to a misdeed at all.

    • kiaigrrl says:

Actually, you are referring to the Urban dictionary meaning which does say:
Run away quickly from misdeed/minor felony.. However, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition is: flee, run away; leave, depart. So I guess it just depends on which dictionary and definition you use.

    • Alyx says:

I think you used scarpered correctly, Ash. In either definition. 😀

  28. Alyx says:

Alyx decided it was time to finish up with these two brats. Disneydyke seemed to be enjoying her “punishment” far too much. She walked over to the energetic brat and leaned down, pressing her palm firmly against DD’s lower back.

“All right, this is where I give you something to remember this experience by,” she said sternly. “Hold onto those chair legs and don’t you dare let go!” So saying, she reached over and yanked down Disneydyke’s knickers to her knees, baring her bottom.

DD squealed and Ash gasped, but Alyx concentrated on lining up the cane against the lowest curve of Disneydyke’s buttocks. She pulled back and delivered the last two strokes in quick succession, watching as the red tramlines bloomed against the white flesh. The strokes weren’t as hard as she could’ve swung, but coming one right after the other and landing on the sensitive sit spot, she knew they would still make an impression.

“Don’t you dare move a muscle,” she instructed DD in a growl. “I will come back to finish you off in a minute!”

As Alyx walked over to the other brat, it was clear Ash knew what was in store for her next. “I think I’ve learned my lesson!” she exclaimed, trying to rise from the chair.

“Not quite,” Alyx said with a slight smile, pushing the brat firmly back down. “Hold onto the chair legs and don’t let go, or you’ll be meeting up with my hairbrush next,” she warned Ash. Just as with Disneydyke, Alyx quickly lowered Ash’s underwear till her bottom was bare. The two strokes that followed also landed right on her sit spot, with just a medium hard intensity but still raising a pair of parallel weals. (Not to mention double-squeals from her victim.)

She left Ash with instructions not to move, and walked back to Disneydyke. Both brats remained right where they’d been left, but Alyx was amused to see they couldn’t help but wriggle at the burn left by the rattan. She slowly drew DD’s knickers up and patted her bottom gently.

“Okay, you can get up now.” When Disneydyke rose, she was given a cuddle by Alyx, who was smiling at the way the brat was wincing as she pulled up her pants. “Go on, rascal,” she said. “And try to stay out of trouble.”

Ash received similar treatment — her panties carefully replaced and a soft pat against her bottom. After she was dressed Alyx hugged her too and ruffled her hair for good measure. “Go join your fellow brat,” she said mock-sternly. “You two can share a pillow.”

  29. Basketball Girl says:

Last time I asked for quotes, I some how took a wrong route and ended up, end up. I think I will try again with the sweetest, most angelic voice to ask for some quotes, if you have some time. Thank you kindly, my dear lady.

    • Alyx says:

Basketball Girl, why is it that even at your sweetest and most angelic, you make me feel like Elmer Fudd — hunting wascally wabbits? 😀

Thank you for the reminder….I hadn’t realized it had been so long since the last one!

  30. Amy says:

I really like the manners quote 🙂

  31. Basketball Girl says:

Yay, new quotes! I’m pretty sure that love and sex are not a part of what I write, but maybe I should try to add that dynamic and level of intimacy. I think it would make scientific writing more palatable for the author and the reader 🙂
I know you are slammed with work and the holidays, so thank you for taking time to add the quotes.

    • Alyx says:

Hah, I thought of you when putting up new quotes, Basketball Girl. “Gotta remember to change those before she asks!” 😀

I’m pretty sure there are scientists who write about love and sex….maybe you ought to change your field of study? 😉

      • Basketball Girl says:

        Happy New Year!
Changing my field of study would require too much homework, too many classes, and too many deadlines 🙂
I think I’ll just focus on love and sex as a personal hobby 😉

  32. Peach says:

    Alyx!! ROTFL
This comedian had a valid point though.

  33. Basketball Girl says:

O such a long time since you have provided us with wisdom from noblewomen. Maybe in between your busyiness before Summer season, you could grant us four quotes? I’d ask for four stories but that may not go over well. And I don’t want to be part of the BBQ 🙂

Anyway, Hope all is well with you Alyx!

    Basketball Girl

    • Alyx says:

FOUR quotes?! You are a demanding little bugger, aren’t you! 😀 But yes, I will provide new quotes. Give me another day to see to it…more soon.

(For the record, I have never BBQ’d a brat. Though I have roasted a backside or two. 😉 )

      • Basketball Girl says:

I’m try out this new thing called asking for what I want. So hence I requested four quotes. Interestingly, people don’t seem to mind when I ask for what I want. If they do, they haven’t said anything.
I thought I’d try again and ask that your highness shares some new quotes? Thank you kindly and I hope you don’t get too much bad weather from the tropical storm coming your way.

        • Alyx says:

Ask, and you shall receive! (Sometimes. 😀 ) There you go, three new quotes for you.
A tropical storm?? Why do I always find out about what’s happening in Hawaii from people who don’t live here!

          • Basketball Girl says:

Thanks for the quotes. I enjoyed them and they made me smile. I do appreciate that you cater to my every whim 🙂 Not to worry though I will not take advantage of it.
The only reason I know about Hawaii is I have friends who live there.

  34. Ash says:

I have a quote… *cough* “I don’t have an attitude problem, you have a problem with my attitude, which is not my problem.” 😀

I keep that at the back of my mind in case I need it. Heee…

  35. Ash says:

“If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the corridor in the other direction.”
    ― Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  36. Basketball Girl says:

In the spirit of giving for Thanksgiving, I decided to give share some of my favorite quotes about perseverance. Hopefully you do not mind my adding these here. If so, just take them down and please accept my apologies.

Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential. ~ Winston Churchill

Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing. ~ Abraham Lincoln

Dripping water hollows out stone, not through force but through persistence. ~ Ovid

The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack in will. ~ Vince Lombardi Jr.

    • Alyx says:

Those quotes are very welcome, Basketball Girl. Thanks for sharing what inspires you. 🙂

    • Basketball Girl, the quote by Vincent Lombardi Jr for me is the most inspiring. For the lack of will one tends to not evolve into the person they are striving to be. My father is a man of very little education, but he still managed to start and have a successful business in landscape. He told me that every great businessman had seen failures and success, and because of his sheer will to get up , dust himself off and rebuild is what makes him a giant among me.

      • Basketball Girl says:

You are completely right bahamagirl. Hard work and dusting yourself off, even when things don’t go the way you expected, and perseverance are great values to live by. Also sounds like your father is a good man.

        • He is 🙂 I live by those values as well as teach my sons them. The difference between them and me is, they are young and this generation believes they know to much til they know nothing. For you to succeed in anything you have to listen and try to not repeat mistakes . They are a work in progress, but it’s work I love because they are my heart and soul.

          • Alyx says:

It sounds like you are doing a good job, Bahamagirl. I have an ex who says that our main responsibility is to try to evolve a little further with every generation. A simple philosophy, but not an easy one. Still, it’s clear you recognize what’s important, and that’s great. 🙂

            • We are suppose too. My people ( Bahamians ) as do some others believe that you are to evolve more in your generation and teach your kids to do better than you or you shame a generation . Not everyone gets this Alyx , they linger to much on the negative and forget the positive . Life itself is a work in progress and not everyday the sun shining, so you do get wet sometimes. Your ex mussy an island grrl too aye? If she dis smart 😉 But she can’t be too smart to leave you my friend 😉 but if she didn’t, you wouldn’t have the boss lady . An you know you and her is mine 🙂

              • Alyx says:

Yes, my ex is a very wise woman, and extremely proud to be an island girl, even though she lives on the mainland now. I love her like family, and I feel blessed to have the boss lady in my life too. Life is full of blessings, if you just take the time to look. We island girls know that, don’t we? I love what you say about being there to evolve and teach your kids better. It’s our responsibility and I admire you for being so grounded. 🙂

  37. Great quotes, Basketball Girl. I like this one from Churchill myself: “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” Damn good advice, if you ask me!

    • Basketball Girl says:

Thank you TMT. I think, I’d like to run through hell with your voice guiding me through the twists and turn to make it bearable. 😉

    • Alyx says:

*LOL* I must remember that one! 😀

    • kati000 says:

I love that quote!! It’s so simple and logical and yet why don’t I ever follow that advice? When I go through hell, I stop walking and think “Geez, why is it so darn hot in here? Let’s go and explore where the fire is coming from …and hey, look, there’s the devil, how interesting!”
This kind of wisdom and humaneness is what I among many other things, so love about England. Character in short.

      • LOL -thank you for the compliment.. I think the Brits respond to adversity with humour, something which is not always appreciated! 😉

It *is* hard to take Churchill’s advice when going through emotional hell and, personally speaking, the temptation to set up camp, make a cup of tea and get lost in admiring the flames, while complaining about being burnt is quite great!!! 🙂

Physical adversity is different though. When I was a kid, I was riding my horse along the edge of a forest, in the middle of nowhere, over an hour’s ride from home, when a deer crashed out of the thicket in front us, making the horse rear. I tumbled ‘out the back door’ as they say, head over heels into brambles, nettles and mud only to see his hooves disappearing over the horizon. I was all scratched up, bruised and my knee was twisted. There were no mobile phones to call for help in those days.

First order of priority was always: ‘recover the horse,’ so I found a bit of deadwood to use as a stick and started to painfully track his hoof-prints over the field when there was a rumble in the sky and the heavens opened and it started to pour with rain. ‘This is HELL!’ I yelled at no one in particular and a voice came back to say ‘keep going’ – which to be honest was all I could do anyway, step by painful step, the rain dripping off me. Its amazing how one finds the inner resilience and pride to actually ‘keep going’.

An hour or so later, walking across country, I hit a lane still miles from home and having lost his tracks, decided to follow that, limping along. Suddenly, in the distance I saw my mother’s car zooming into view and my heart plummeted: rescue was coming like the Horseman of the Apocalypse bringing verbal destruction! Rolling down the window her irate face appeared: ‘Your horse arrived home without you! Get in!’ If I thought my limp across the fields was bad enough – the real hell was listening to her berate me all the way home! *bg*

        • kati000 says:

Outch !!! I retrospectively really feel for you ! *hug*
Reminds me of the time I broke two fingers when playing volleyball in school when I was about 12.
It hurt pretty badly and looked awful. The PE teacher called my mother who took me to the hospital where the fingers were put into some plaster bandage. When my father came home in the evening he saw the bandage, asked what had happened and then started to berate me : “Can’t you pay more attention !!” etc. pp. looking grimly at me all evening.
Why do parents do that ? Your accident wasn’t your fault and mine wasn’t my fault. *shaking head*.

And I agree, in physically adverse situations it is easier to keep going than in emotionally adverse one. Maybe in the case of physical adversity our animal mode kicks in.
          —————————————————
Anyway, it was really reassuring ( 🙂 ) to read that even bosslady is tempted to take a detour and go looking for some cream tea in that cosy – though slightly warm- little tea room around the corner. when walking through hell *wg*.

As for the German view on British endurance and stamina, I once heard the following fond joke on the German (no, I am NOT going to write wireless 🙂 ) radio: An Englishman suffers from tooth ache, which after a while becomes very bad, so he goes to the dentist. The dentist takes some very coarse pliers and extracts the bad tooth without anaesthesia. The man is in excruciating pain and almost faints of pain during the procedure. The next day he meets a neighbour on the street and the neighbour asks how it went whereupon the man answers : “Oh, fine fine, maybe a tad unpleasant.” . 🙂

          One more:
Some friends of mine were traveling through the UK once and they had had a stretch of bad weather. So one night they stayed at this B&B and in the morning they saw that the heavy rain had stopped but that it was still drizzling, cold and overcast. When they left the landlady went with them to the door, stepped outside, looked up at the sky and said in all earnestness: “Ah, yet another fine day !”
Now, how do you top that, dear friends and fellows ?

        • Ash says:

OMG; TMT… your mother is lucky you didn’t have my personality! If I had to stumble around for an hour after a bleedin horse threw me off, I’d be yelling and cussing at anyone who dared to criticize me. LOL 😉

          • kati000 says:

Believe me, Ash. Raised and educated accordingly, you would MOST CERTAINLY not have said a peep and would have just let it wash over you.

            • Ash says:

Why? It’s not fair if people criticize you for something you couldn’t help. And… I mean… if someone was hurt?! Then you should be nice to them. 😦

I’d be like “Mommy! The stupid horse threw me off! It hurts! *cry*” 😳 Hehehe… does that make me sound spoiled? 😛

              • kati000 says:

No, not spoiled, just raised liberally… 🙂 Cherish it !
There are more …err…old-fashioned views on parenting along the lines of ” Why didn’t you pay more attention ? Now straighten up and stop blubbing, will you !”

  38. thanatos150 says:

Whaahaha xD “War is God’s way of teaching Americans geography.” That is just to good!

    Quotes are awesome 🙂

“If you can’t be a good example, then you’ll just have to be a horrible warning.” This one will be my new life motto! XP

    • Ash says:

Loved the first one. Hahahaha. No offence, Americans, but Europeans love to make fun of American geography skills. Our favorite youtube video is the one where Kelly Pickler says “I thought Europe was a country… I know they speak French there.” *giggle* 😛

    • Alyx says:

Glad you liked them, Thanatos and Ash. And yes, I am a particularly good example of being geographically challenged! :p

  39. gypsyninja says:

“My motto is to always move forward. Every single day I see the sun come up, and the clouds race through the sky, I am thankful to be alive, and I am indebted to my faith whether it’s faith in a higher power, faith in the human condition to survive or just plain faith in myself.” -Kevin Hines

    • Alyx says:

That’s a good one, Gypsyninja. I feel the same way about being grateful for life. Thanks for sharing that. 🙂

      • gypsyninja says:

Yes I’m working on looking at the bright side of life after receiving some devastating news about my physical health which could very well suspend my martial art career indefinitely – something that I had dedicated my life to since I was two. It’s all I know. But I look at Kevin and all he has accomplished and his strength and I know that I can do it too. He is an inspiration and makes me realize that life is a gift.

        • Alyx says:

I’m sorry to hear about your health woes, Gypsyninja. *cuddle* Please take care, and I will be sending good thoughts your way. I know how much your martial arts mean to you. 🙂

          • tigersninja says:

Thank you Alyx. Fortunately, I am surrounded by loving and supportive people including my girlfriend (and Top), Deven who has been my rock and will not tolerate me getting down on myself – she is my Tiger. 🙂 Btw, you’ve probably noticed that my name here has changed to tigersninja because I am finally setting up my new blog and that is my WordPress log in – sorry for any confusion.

            • Alyx says:

We all need someone to look out for us, and I’m glad you have your Tiger. 🙂

And okay, it’ll be Tigersninja from now on. Send me the link to your blog when you get it set up, so I can add it to my links page, okay?

              • tigersninja says:

After being in such a toxic and unhealthy relationship for so long, it’s so new and feels so wonderful to finally be with someone who truly cares so much about me! And yes, I’ll let you know about my blog. Thank you so much!

  40. Ash says:

Hey, Alyx. I just read a great Rachel Maddow quote, and so I thought I should share it on here, because I believe Rachel should be president.

“But here’s the thing about rights – they’re not actually supposed to be voted on. That’s why they’re called rights.”
Rachel Maddow, super awesome lesbian and TV-person.

  41. Basketball Girl says:

I really like this quote: vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change. Makes growing hard, but it explains why it is so hard. Two months in a row without asking for quotes, how am I supposed to bug you?

    • Alyx says:

Yes, Brene Brown said that many companies would ask her to come speak, but “don’t talk about vulnerability and shame.” So she asked what kinds of things they wanted her to speak on, and they said innovation, creativity, and change. So she pointed out vulnerability is required for all of those things, which I think is a very powerful message to embrace. And, yes, why it’s so hard. 🙂

Don’t worry, Basketball Girl, I have faith in your ability to find things to bug me about. 😉 (Kidding!)

  42. Mil says:

We are all continually asked to learn how to ask for what we need, only to practice accepting what we are given.
    – Mark Nepo, on Super Soul Sunday

Hey Alyx, this quote above, I’m confussed by how it’s written. Does he mean to ask for what we need, or accept what we’re given?

    Really great quotes 🙂

    • Alyx says:

      Yes. *g*

It’s both, actually. That’s the great challenge for all of us. It takes work on ourselves to learn how to ask for exactly what we need. I definitely struggle with that. And yet, when we finally summon the courage and vulnerability to always ask for what we need, we don’t always get it, do we?

So then comes the second part, which is accepting what we’re given. That takes practice too, because our happiness is proportional to the amount we wish things were different. If we can learn to accept things as they are, we are much more satisfied in life. (Again, not forgetting the first part — we keep asking for what we need, keep reaching for our goals, yes?)

Iyanla Vanzant (another person who’s appeared on Oprah) applied this to relationships: “You have to meet people where they are. *pause* And sometimes, you have to leave them there.” *LOL* This is a good thing to remind yourself when people drive you crazy, as they inevitably will. 😀

      • kati000 says:

hmm…sigh… life is hard…(and injust and unfair…and btw where are the smilies on wordpress???) 🙂

      • Mil says:

Oh I see, thanks mate 🙂 Yeah, that’s a real challenge to do both *scratches head*. I quite like the equation Happiness = Success – Expectation. :D. But I guess that’s not going to work forever if needs aren’t being met (or even asked for). Good one.

  43. kati000 says:

I really like that quote. The way I understand it is doing both: asking for what we need and in the process accepting what we are given.

  44. kati000 says:

PS: …what an awful avatar I have !

    • Mil says:

      Yeah Kati… That’s a shocka! 🙂

    • Alyx says:

You know you can create your own avatar, right? I think I have the directions in some post somewhere. If you can’t find it, I’ll look it up for you. (But you probably have more time than I do. 😀 )

      • kati000 says:

Yes, I’ll do that as soon as I’m back to decent internet speed and have my own pictures on my computer handy. Thank you for your offer to help !! But you’re right: I momentarily have definitely more time you 🙂 and also as a community we need to preserve your time and energy as much as possible 🙂 🙂 . After all there are …err…more important things you have to take care of *ggg*.
Your avatar is very pretty btw.

  45. kati000 says:

yeah, isn’t it ? It’s the Halloween model they have on display…
I have to do something about that…

  46. bahamagirl1996 says:

Hey Alyx, you livin? I jus saw the report on a crash on your side. Just makin sure my favorite Island girl OK

    • Alyx says:

Still here, babes. *hug* If you’re talking about the plane crash, that was very sad. My sister’s in the same line of work, so kinda scary. Thanks for asking. 🙂

  49. Basketball Girl says:

    Hi Ms. Alyx,
I noticed that the quotes page looks very similar over the past 4 months. Is there any chance we could get perhaps some new inspiration?

  50. Peach says:

Dang, I only saw this August 2015 quote today! Never read the book but I did see the movie. It was very good, sad and inspirational, making me cry several times.
Oh did you notice in the movie the adults grabbing children’s ear and marching them home quite often! Also the teacher spanked the girl in front of everyone!
Um… time for a new quote ma’am? Maybe a funny one from Miss Piggy again? 😉
    Happy new year Alyx.

    • Alyx says:

Hey Peach, you’re right, way past time for a new quote. I wasn’t planning on a Miss Piggy one….but will add one just for you. 🙂 (Oh, btw, I never saw the movie. But I did love the book.)
